The walk to the summit can be as rewarding or even more as the view up there, because no goal and expectations have been set for it and disappointment is far less possible.

Island Info The Centre Places of Interest

BetancuriaPuerto del Rosario – town.

Puerto del Rosario (PdR) is the capital of Fuerteventura since 1860. The town has a couple of interesting main streets that can be walked easily. In these streets you will find all kinds of shops, bars and restaurants. For those who do not want to stroll around in the sun and enjoy terraces, you can visit the huge air conditioned shopping centre “Las Rotondas”. PdR also has a very active night life and most night clubs are grouped in 2-3 clusters.

Betancuria---ChurchBetancuria virtually lies in the centre of Fuerteventura. Well hidden, surrounded by the oldest remains of volcanic activity on the Canary Islands.
When Jean de Béthencourt from Normandy and his friend knight Gadifer de la Salle set foot on Fuerteventura at the beach of Puerto de la Peña (now Ajuy) in 1402, they decided to visit the barren island and moved up with their soldiers through the barranco (dry riverbed) towards the gorge in the granite wall (where now the artificial lake is) but had trouble in climbing it. Once on top, they were astounded to see a valley full with palm trees and a river. At the end of this river, surrounded by mountains and thus well protected against pirates, Jean de Béthencourt founded the first capital of the Canaries, Betancuria.

DSCF4077Caleta de Fuste or Caleta, as it is also known, definitely emits the feeling of plenty... The harbour where you can watch the open sea trained Sea Lions, laze around on a Catamaran, Whale Watch, a days yachting, or even a submarine tour! A little further into town in the Commercial Centre BARCELO, next to the taxi stand, is CAFFÉNERO in the centre walkway where you can get crêpes, pizzas, ice cream and Italian coffee. The WINDMILL BAR offers the best fish and chips in town amongst many other scrummy dishes, AND the kids can run free in their enclosed play area!!! Please visit TOMMY NUTTERS for good food at correct prices and a warm atmosphere.

When you are relaxing in one of the holiday complexes or when enjoying the strolls down the main roads of the touristic town you are located in, you may think that a visit to Puerto del Rosario is not worth the effort because you guess that it is an industrial and restless area. Well, you’re definitely wrong. Although it is the capital of Fuerteventura, it does not have the stressy business like at home. Yes, you have some kind of “rush hour” at certain roundabouts, but it is somewhat hilarious, compared to what you may suffer back home. Puerto del Rosario offers you a combination and diversity of activities and local shops that you will not be able to find elsewhere.
